AI-Driven Political Simulation Game: Filling the Gaps in Interactive Decision-Making

As we continue to explore the immense potential of AI, we find ourselves at the intersection of technology, politics, and social science. I’ve been working on an ambitious project - a political simulation game, driven by AI. The aim? To fill in the gaps in our understanding and application of AI in interactive decision-making scenarios.

The Need

While AI has seen remarkable advancements, it’s the application of these technologies in the real world that truly validates their potential. One such application is the simulation of complex systems, like governance, where countless variables interact to shape outcomes. Existing solutions lacked the intuitive nature and flexibility needed to create and experiment with multi-agent simulations. This is where our project comes in.

The Solution

We’ve developed a political simulation game where players choose a country and an AI assistant to shape the game environment. Decisions made by players directly influence various parameters like education, economy, and defense, which in turn affect secondary factors like quality of life and minister loyalty.

The game incorporates a committee of AI ministers, each with unique interests, adding a layer of complexity and negotiation to policy implementation. This mirrors real-world politics, where decision-making is often a negotiation between diverse interest groups.

The Tech Stack

A key aspect of this project is the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) like OpenAI’s GPT-3 and Meta AI’s LLaMA2. These models serve as the foundation of our AI agents, enabling rich, human-like interactions. Langchain framework was used to create and manage AI agents. Streamlit was used to build an interface.

For the development of the multi-agent system, I created a new Python library. This library provides a simple and flexible way to create and experiment with simulation agents, filling a significant gap in the available tools for such projects. I am still working on this library and it will be open-sourced soon.

Overcoming Challenges

Developing this project wasn’t without its challenges. One of the biggest was the operational cost of running LLMs. We explored various deployment methods to find a cost-effective solution without compromising performance.

Another challenge was the slow response time of LLaMA2 on local machines. To overcome this, we are exploring a cloud-based solution that would allow us to maintain high performance while keeping costs down.

The Future

The project is a stepping stone towards a future where AI agents are integral components of human organizations. It’s a glimpse into a world where AI not only aids decision-making but also plays an active role in the process.

I am brimming with ideas for future enhancements and am excited to continue exploring the potential of AI in governance and organizational operations. Stay tuned for more updates as we navigate this thrilling journey!
